SUMMERTIME BASSIN'
When an angler is looking for bass during the summertime, he must take into consider-
ation several factors: water conditions, weather, mood of the fish, and the time of day. During the summer time, the best time to catch bass is during low light conditions-from dusk till dawn- because bass tend to be roaming and feeding. The major goal of the angler is finding the active fish and then he can slow down and fish for the inactive ones.
After an angler decides on the location, he can effectively cover shallow water by picking the correct lure. A buzz bait or spinner bait would be a good choice-an angler could cover plenty of water with both baits. I personally prefer using buzz baits during extremely low light conditions (my best lure for fishing moonless nights). This lure can be retrieved with various speeds (depends on the fish's mood) but a slow speed seems to be the best. Fishing top water bait like buzz bait is one of the most exciting ways to catch bass.
If top water presentation is not producing, try a sub-surface lure like the spinner bait. The blade bait is one of the popular baits to find bass. It is a great lure to search for active bass. This lure can be fished at any depth and speed (once again, depend on the fish's mood). There are many weights, blades, and blade combinations available to the angler. A good weight to start out with is a 3/8 oz size. The angler can deviate from a 1/8 oz to 3/4oz or greater. The water condition will determine what blade type. For muddy waters, use a colorado blade, which gives off the most vibration/least flash. The willow leaf blade gives off the most flash/least vibration and is best suited for clear to stained waters. In consideration to blade combination, an angler cannot go wrong with a smaller front colorado and larger rear willow leaf blades.
If buzz baits and spinner baits are not producing, an angler must slow down the presentation even more and the jig can be the ticket. This lure can be fished fast and efficiently. The jig represents a crawfish and when bass are feeding on them, you cannot go wrong.
As I pointed out in this article, a lure presentation depends on the fish's mood. Make sure you listen to what the fish want and not what you what to give the fish.
